Background
BudgetEase, a personal finance app designed for freelancers, was struggling to retain users despite offering powerful features like receipt scanning, income tracking, and budgeting tools. Feedback revealed that the app felt overwhelming and unintuitive, with many users abandoning it during onboarding or shortly after their first use. The cluttered interface and complex navigation made essential tasks, like categorizing expenses or reviewing budgets, unnecessarily difficult. I was tasked with redesigning the user experience to create a more approachable, streamlined interface that encouraged consistent use.
Approach
To address the core issues, I began by conducting research to understand the pain points faced by freelancers when managing their finances. User interviews highlighted the need for a simpler onboarding process and a more intuitive way to categorize and review expenses. Analytics confirmed these findings, showing high drop-off rates during setup and initial use. Competitor analysis also provided insights into what was missing in the existing design.
Results
The redesigned BudgetEase app was met with immediate success. User retention increased by 50% in the first three months, with many users citing the streamlined interface and simplified onboarding as significant improvements. The time required to set up the app decreased by 30%, and the new dashboard received praise for its clarity and focus. Users appreciated the automated categorization feature, which reduced frustration and saved time.
